This volume focuses on trans panic to characterise the nature of current mobilisations against trans and gender-diverse populations, while also highlighting structural and historical dimensions of transphobia and the ways in which it is politicised for reactionary purposes.

Contemporary anti-trans politics have become a central part of far-right mobilisation across electoral and protest arenas. Simultaneously, transphobia has become increasingly visible in mainstream debates about gender and sexuality across diverse cultural contexts, illustrating the broad ideological purchase of trans panic for a wide range of actors. However, the centrality of anti-trans mobilisation has to date received limited attention in the scholarship on the far right and the literature on anti-gender politics. This book connects trans panic to different ideas and ideologies, while addressing the various strategic and mediated forms of communicating trans hostility. Including chapters focused on Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia, the volume shows the truly global nature of trans panic in contemporary politics. Together, they illustrate how trans panic constitutes both a central component and a flexible strategic tool of authoritarian governance.
